How to download an Eclipse Update Site

There are many cases where it is useful to download an Eclipse update site:

  • One might want to provide all Eclipse IDE features needed for a software development project from a central location, simplifying installation and update for the project team.
  • It is good pratice to assemble target platforms from update sites. However, there are several issues with remote sites; e.g. they can become unavailable and they cannot be put under configuration management.

Many Eclipse projects provide downloadable archives of their update sites. However, some smaller and 3rd party projects do not. Fortunately, the Eclipse IDE can be used to download an update site. As descibed here, the following two commands have to be invoked on the command line from within the Eclipse installation directory:

In Windows, one has to call “eclipse.exe” instead of “eclipse”.
